They protect from wood decay, water saturation and termites by using an environmentally-friendly water-based process that reduces hazardous air pollutants emissions by more that 96 percent. The windows also incorporate high-performance low-e glass that lowers energy costs. The coatings incorporated into the windows block 83% of harmful UV rays and 96% of the sun\u2019s infrared heat.<\/li>\n<li>Our <strong>air-conditioning units<\/strong> conform to the new energy efficient standards that increase the efficiency by a minimum of 30% leading to a reduced carbon footprint and reducing electrical consumption. In addition to the increased efficiency, the refrigerant \u201cPuron R410A\u201d is a safe, non-toxic, non-flammable and environmentally responsible product<\/li>\n<li>Urban Exchange&#8217;s <strong>green roof<\/strong> between the two towers limits the use of water through efficiencies in landscaping and includes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timbertech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TimberTech<\/a> walkway. This wood composite product uses recycled wood waste that does not require any chemically treated woods, painting, staining or sealing.<\/li>\n<li>Throughout the building process, we chose as many products as possible with <strong>low VOC emissions<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/iaq\/voc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volatile organic compounds<\/a>) thus reducing harmful contaminants for indoor air quality. One example is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benjaminmoore.com\/bmpsweb\/portals\/bmps.portal?_nfpb=true&amp;_windowLabel=contentrenderer_1_10&amp;contentrenderer_1_10_actionOverride=%2Fbm%2Fcms%2FContentRenderer%2FrenderContent&amp;contentrenderer_1_10cnp=public_site%2Farticles%2Fproducts_specs%2Fps_int_paints&amp;contentrenderer_1_10np=public_site%2Farticles%2Fproduct_articles%2Fpa_int_environmentally_friendly&amp;_pageLabel=fc_productsspecs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eco Spec paint from Benjamin Moore<\/a>, which is a low odor, zero VOC, 100% acrylic latex paint that provides high hiding, excellent touch up, and a uniform finish.<\/li>\n<li>All apartments at Urban Exchange feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy Star appliances<\/a> \u2013 this translates into reduced energy consumption using 10-15% less energy and water than standard models.<\/li>\n<li>We have added a recycling dumpster for recycling of cardboard and paper products.<\/li>\n<li>The use of <strong>long lasting cement siding that<\/strong> is manufactured in Virginia and thus reduces the environmental impact caused by transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u201cThe single most important factor in green architecture is durability. If you want something to be green it has to last a long time. It has to handle water, heat and UV radiation. Fiber-cement handles all three exceptionally well\u201d \u2013 Joseph Lstiburek (Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jameshardie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JamesHardie<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The downtown <strong>location<\/strong> of Urban Exchanges reduces the need for your car with an onsite bus stop.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>concrete parking garage<\/strong> within the building helps limit the site disturbance for additional asphalt parking areas.<\/li>\n<li>The redevelopment of the old Joe Bowman Chevrolet dealership provided an opportunity to innovative the living environment in Downtown Harrisonburg.
